Round the Island Race 2011: this weekend

June 19, 2011

In 5 days time, the Round the Island Race will take place. A fantastic event, competitors come from all over the UK, other parts of Europe and as far away as the USA to follow the 50 nautical mile course round the Isle of Wight. Starting on the famous Royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes, we will race westabout, to The Needles, round St Catherine’s Point and Bembridge Ledge buoy, and back into the Solent to the finish line at Cowes.

This year, it is the 80th anniversary of the event. The race has never been shy of competitors, however this year records are broken and already 1908 yachts have subscribed. This entry number overtakes the previous record set in 2008 making it the 4th largest participation sporting event held in the UK, attracting more than 16,000 sailors. Basically, everything that floats and has a sail will be on the water this Saturday. WINSOME will be prepared on Friday so we can be out on the water early the next day. She will be crewed by her Cowes Week crew, weather permitting, expectations are high, especially after last years performance. For the first time this season, we will be able to use our secret weapon, she is called Ruby. We have not met her yet, but the word is that she should be great, nice curves and there to please the whole crew. We are all anxious and looking forward to meet her. Are you curious? We will keep you informed.
