Cowes week 2011: 13 days to go!

July 24, 2011

Since 1826 Cowes Week has been Cowes week. Back then, during the days when men were made from steel and boats from wood, racing already took part on the Solent. Nowadays, wood has faded from the scene (recently a wooden gaff cutter was forced to retire from racing) and carbon and GRP have taken its place. So were does that leave the men? Well, do not despair, for years now WINSOME has been on the scene, a beautiful S&S yacht crewed by Holland’s finest. Cowes week has evolved and anno 2011 it stages up to 40 daily races for around 1,000 boats and is the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world. We do feel really blessed to be able to take part in such an event.

Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, as the event is now known, is a fusion of many exciting elements, with its great mix of competitive sailing and social activities. The 8,500 competitors range from Olympic and world class professionals to weekend sailors.  In excess of 100,000 spectators come to watch the sailing, enjoy the parties and live entertainment, and to experience the unique atmosphere. It is genuinely a one-of-a-kind event. This is the first year that Aberdeen Asset Management sponsor Cowes Week after Skandia. We are looking forward to see what they bring to Cowes this year!

After a ‘slight toucher’ during the last Round the Island Race, WINSOME was brought to Berthon’s Boatyard for some tender loving care. This week she will be brought back to Cowes to compete in the Channel Race this weekend. In the following days after this race, she will be prepared for Cowes Week, the next and one of our main events this season. We will keep you posted!
