Cowes week, day 1

August 3, 2013

Day 1, great conditions: 20 knots of wind, clear blue skies and a dedicated crew. After all our preparations, we misjudged the start, came in between the inner limit and the committee boat and had te restart. It delayed us for two minutes and we ended up sailing in between many boats and a lot of dirt (air). We dug in and started to bring ourself back in the race. We had a beat toward the island and a kite ride down on the mainland side. After a wonderful starboard rounding from our talented helmswomen we had another beat up the solent bringing us towards Lymington, a slight misjudgement had us overstanding the mark. Another kiteride down towards Cowes, beat up the Solent again and a final kite ride down to the finish. On these kiterides we made a lot of ground on our competitors, hugging the island side, the shallow waters. Excellent navigation from Harry on this part. Crossing the line, we ended sixth on handicap. A score we were actually quite content with, regarding our start. Quite frustrating to see that place 4- 6 were very close on corrected time… that’s sailing. We are all looking forward to Sunday, results are promising and hopes are high.
