THANK-YOU-NOTE

After our perhaps secretly hoped, but not seriously expected victory in IRC4 Class of The Rolex Sydney Hobart Race 2008, I would like to thank anyone who has cooperated in whatever form to achieve this success by means of a few personal words in this message.

Na onze misschien wel stiekem gehoopte, maar niet serieus verwachte overwinning in IRC4 Class van de Rolex Sydney Hobart Race 2008 wil ik proberen iedereen, die hieraan in welke vorm dan ook meegewerkt heeft, te bedanken door een kort persoonlijk woord in dit bericht.

Mijn bemanning Marjolein, Frank, Reima, Joost, Francois, Pieter en Boj voor het fantastisch sturen/varen/bemannen van Winsome. Met hen ben ik al vele vele flessen Champagne en nog meer flessen wijn verder gekomen in Hobart, in Beauty Point en in Melbourne en daarom zal ik het wat hen betreft hierbij laten.

Robert for all his preparations to accommodate the crew in Australia, to fully prepare Winsome for all requirements imposed by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia [CYCA] and for all his efforts to have the boat fit for The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race [RSHYR].

Joost Heikens to prepare a state of the art Medical Emergency Kit. Fortunately we did not have to use it. Boj might have another opinion.

Folkert Mulder voor zijn teambuilding effort. Het blowcarten moet tenminste een vruchtje hebben afgeworpen.

Garmin Netherlands for the big effort they made to fix our back-up Hand-held GPS at the last possible moment.

Gerwin Jansen van het Watersportverbond met het razend snel produceren van een nieuwe IMS Meetbrief nodig voor de stabiliteitsgegevens die aan CYCA aangeleverd moesten worden alvorens we zelfs maar uitgenodigd konden worden om in te schrijven voor deze race.

Margreet Postma van Nautische Unie voor haar altijd (ieder jaar eigenlijk) vlotte vlottenhulp.

Maartje Leidelmeijer van Agentschap Telecom voor het in orde brengen van de Epirb registratie, een lastige kwestie althans als er haast bij is.

De kapitein en bemanning van m/s Sampogracht voor het veilige transport van Winsome en Pinta-M over de halve bol naar Brisbane.

Marcel Pol van Sevenstar die Winsome vastgezet heeft aan boord van Sampogracht in Antwerpen.

Sevenstar/Richard Klabbers en Jack Oostrum voor het transporteren van Winsome.

Pantaenius for having granted Winsome Third Part Liability Insurance necessary to do the race.

Peter Staalsmid voor de organisatie in Brisbane. Hij heeft zelf Winsome naar haar ligplaats gevaren vanaf Sampogracht en afgemeerd.

Ronny Vermeire van Jachtwerf Delta in Breskens voor het ontmasten en transportklaar maken van Winsome incl. het inpakken van de mast als een kerstcadeautje.

Theun, Wouter en René voor hun grote hulp bij de voorbereidingen in Brisbane, voor het zetten en perfect trimmen van de mast en voor het bemannen van Winsome bij de delivery naar Pittwater, Sydney NSW. Zij bleven daarvoor niet alleen 10 dagen in Brisbane, maar voeren ook nog eens drie dagen mee voor de delivery naar Pittwater en bleven daar ook nog eens drie dagen. De dagen die we samen in Cairns doorbrachten met Scuba-diving, in afwachting van de verfklus in Brisbane, moeten we eigenlijk aftrekken.

Dino Inguanza, Coyle and their team to repair resp. paint the portside of her hull and full underwatership in Brisbane in a very organized, professional and efficient manner with uninterrupted work during the weekend in order to get Winsome ready in time, enabling us to sail her on schedule to Pittwater.

Ian Davis of Hood Sails (Brisbane) to make new sail battens for our delivery WB Cuben Fibre Mainsail.

Jason Locke of MET Services to repair some electrical related devices and put the new anodes carried from Holland together.

Peter & Leonie Antill and Ian Lewis of Bosun’s Locker for their deliveries and advices in Pittwater.

Peter Greg from Boat Mate shipwrights doing the necessary carpetering on board in connection with the required lock on the upper washboard and the installation of the VHF Radio replacing the old radar monitor.

The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club [RPAYC] to accommodate Winsome in Pittwater.

John Bryant for the accommodation in Trappers Way.

Millicent Jones for preparing for us a very nice Christmas lunch at Mackerel Beach, on Pittwater.

Alex Withworth for his invaluable advice, guidance and race related documents for the race and tactics towards Hobart.

Freddy Franssens van Hall Spars voor zijn aanbevelingen met betrekking tot de running backstays, gegeven per telefoon vanuit Cochin, India. We hebben ze nooit gebruikt, onze rating is er 2 ‰ slechter door geworden, maar ze hebben ons wel de hele race een veilig gevoel gegeven.

Peter Just of Riggtech Pittwater for the creative preparation and installation of the running backstays, for the installation of the Daisy and for the making of a new halyard for the mainsail, nicely painted with UV protection.

Renze Runia en Jan de Vries van UK-Halsey-De Vries Sails voor de zeilgarderobe reparaties en voor twee Genoa III grommertjes, die we overigens in de race ook daadwerkelijk allebei gebruikt hebben.

Carl Grootjes en Dennis Oud voor hun tele-adviezen ivm installatie van de Transas kaarten en van het toplicht. Een van Carl’s kinderen zal in ieder geval een klas moeten doubleren omdat papa geen tijd meer had voor huiswerkcontrole omdat hij steeds met Winsome moest praten; is het niet Carl?

Jan Scholten van Contender voor het delen met ons van zijn kennis over de Race en zijn waarschuwingen tav het passeren en binnenvaren van Bass Street.

Marty Andersen and Tim Dempsey of Andersen Marine for the installation of a brand new HF Radio and for checking all other equipment on board necessary to satisfy the requirements of CYCA in Sydney.

Elaine Fowler and her co-inspector to do the first safety check in Pittwater.

Angus Gordon Commodore of RPAYC, for sharing with me his experience in this Race by talking a couple of hours to me about it.

RPAYC for giving me the disposal of their entire bar/restaurant for an afternoon to sort and distribute all charts in an orderly manner.

Scott Finsten and Frank Bergman to get us a berth at CYCA.

Roscoe (he never gave us his surname) to install the Tracker on board and change the position upon our request without giving a blink.

Tim Cox, Roger Wragby, Steve Craig and Justine Kirkjian for their continued support in getting Winsome qualified for the Race and comply with all Rules and Regulations in as per the Notice of Race.

John Anderson to weigh Winsome to comply to the Notice of Race 3.1.3 “A boat may only enter if the boat has been weighed on scales by an RORC approved measurer”.

Mike Urwin and Jenny Howlings of RORC Rating Office in Lymington to give advice on IRC related issues and for the issuance of our IRC Certificate (as well as that of Pinta-M) at the very last moment i.e. only three days prior to the start.

Doug Sturrock (related to Joanna Clark) of Sturrock’s Ship Chandler for his sales over the counter and for his brilliant advice how to find an expert (i.e. in the bar of CYCA) to repair our refrigerator by the name of Allan Robertson.

The very same Allan of Yacht Electric Solutions to repair our refrigerator just one day prior to the race, get some spare parts and save us from having to eat miserable meals during the race.

Marghareta (van Beuningen) for her enthousiastic support in organizing a Christmas eve dinner in Sydney NSW, in reserving our rooms in Hobart and to be present with Champagne at the pier when we berthed after finishing (latter in absence of Patrick de Koster).

My thanks cannot stop at the start of the race but need to continue until well after the race:

Bruce Craw of The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania [RYCT] to make us feel so welcome in Hobart, patiently waiting with a box of bottled beer on the quay until we had satisfied all reporters who came to interview us and who guided us later into RYCT for a dinner on 31st of December and a lunch on the 1st of January after the price giving.

Finally there are many many people who did not directly contribute to the victory by adding something to Winsome, but indirectly by making her crew feel welcome and home on the Southern hemisphere.

These people include Russell and Jeannie Tapp, Richard & Eileen Cornielje, Peter and Coby Dobromilsky (showing us Hobart’s hottest place in town), Alastair Douglas to get us safely into Beauty Point and Ron Chandler to give us a berth. Hans Bosman to pick me up at Beauty Point and show me somwhat more of Tasmania. Last but not least Bob Tanner of the City of Melbourne and Peter Bartlett and his team of Asiaworld Melbourne.

His Excellency the Honourable Peter Underwood, The Governor of Tasmania, having said some nice words about Winsome and Pinta-M to come all the way from Holland.

The Honorary Consul to the Netherlands in Tasmania George Huizing for “discovering us” in his teritory i.e. at the RYCT lunch and welcome us on Tasmania.

Graham Geary of G.G.M. Group who has managed to give us the feeling leaving Winsome in good hands in Melbourne, even if the mast will be taken down in Melbourne and be prepared for ocean transport.

ABN Amro Bank die steeds mijn limieten heeft verhoogd en de race op de voet gevolgd bovendien. Misschien was dat wel om te zien of ik nog wel terug zou komen voor de nodige aanzuivering?

Some of you might be left out by mistake, but the success in the 2008 ROLEX SYDNEY HOBART RACE cannot solely be claimed by Winsome and her crew.

Iedereen die Winsome in deze race heeft gevolgd via de tracker van CYCA of via de webpagina en zo nu en dan een bericht of commentaar op de webpagina heeft achtergelaten. Aline die zo aardig was om dag en nacht mijn berichten op de webpagina te plaatsen.

Mijn kleinkinderen Theun, Wiecher en Maas die de race op de voet gevolgd hebben. Theun heeft al aan zijn moeder uitgelegd hoe dat rating system werkt, “maar eigenlijk snapt ze het nog steeds niet helemaal” zegt hij.

Ik dank jullie allemaal. Het was een geweldige ervaring, om niet te vergeten.

I do thank all of you. It was a lifetime experience, not to be forgotten.
